Youth Are Important!

Youth have much to contribute on different issues that exist within society and globally. With the different skills, experiences, and motivations as they will be the next leaders, activists, and global citizens to move in a positive direction.

The definition of who is a youth varies from institution to institution. Generally it can range from someone as young as 10 years of age to someone 35 years of age. Typically, the range is usually 15-30 years of age to be defined as youth and further divisions of age ranges can be made to best represent the experiences of youth. Keep in mind that anyone 18 years of age and under are still considered children when considering rights.

Youth perspectives are important to include as they continue to learn about society, form their own opinions, and determine what is important to them. There is also a perception advantage that youth have that admires the creativity, imagination, and more risk-taking behaviours that adults in decision-making roles are not likely to partake in. This allows new ideas, approaches, and solutions to come forward even with varying degrees of reaction from later generations.

While youth can have their own reasons for taking action, it is important to provide the space and opportunity for youth to be appreciated and heard about their ideas and perspectives. While there are youth participating and starting their own initiatives to be the solution to problems in our societies, it is just as critical to recognize when and how youth do not feel like they can contribute or have barriers to participation that we can mitigate.

The creativity, imagination, and initiative of youth’s action is part of the global action. International Youth day is coming up on August 12th with the theme, "From Clicks To Progress: Youth Digital Pathways For Sustainable Development." The theme recognizes the skills and knowledge of youth with digitalization and technologies while also considering the inequitable access to technologies. Tapping into the potential of youth with their skills, knowledge, and initiative is necessary to the adaptability and sustainability of our societies.
